A Journey Back
If audiences walked down toward the Summerside waterfront in 1996, they might remember the quiet excitement of a brand-new stage opening its doors. For thirty years, those doors have let in thousands of stories, a lot of laughter, and more than a few standing ovations. But this July, Harbourfront Theatre is turning the spotlight onto the old house itself.
To mark its 30th anniversary, Harbourfront Theatre has teamed up with Craig Fair Productions to present something special for the community. It is called A Journey Back and it is less like a retrospective and more like a time machine.
The theatre has gathered a powerhouse cast of sixteen PEI performers—plus a surprise guest or two—to weave together the music and moments that defined its stage. If a song made audience members cry there in 2004, or a performance gave them goosebumps a decade later, there is a very good chance they will hear it again.
This isn’t just a history lesson about a building on the Summerside waterfront. It is a reflection of the community. A theatre is just wood and wiring until a community shows up and gives it a heartbeat. Whether audience members were sitting in the front row during the inaugural ’96 season or just moved to the Island last summer, this show is a firsthand look at what happens when a community rallies around its creators.
A Journey Back: Harbourfront Theatre’s 30 Year Celebration Show is high-energy and it might make audiences a little misty-eyed but it is a proper toast to where Harbourfront Theatre is going next. Performances run July 10 and 11 at 7:30 pm.
