Coming Home

Musical play explores Black history and identity

Precious Osarenkhoe and KhaRå Martin

The Arts Guild’s Rooted & Rising series, featuring performances that evoke and provoke, continues in July with Coming Home – The Musical Play, running July 2, 3, and 4 at 8 pm.

Exploring themes rooted in Black history and identity that continue to resonate today, Coming Home is a soul-stirring musical tribute honouring the strength, resilience, and brilliance of Black women. Through the voices and legacies of Nina Simone, Josephine Baker, and Jessye Norman, the production weaves together jazz, blues, and opera to tell a story of artistry as activism.

Blending live performance, theatrical storytelling, and powerful musical interpretation, Coming Home traces how these iconic women confronted racism, defied expectations, and transformed global stages while remaining rooted in their identities. Their songs become more than performance—they become protest, healing, and homecoming.

Created by multidisciplinary artist KhaRå Martin, who also stars as Josephine Baker, the production reflects her commitment to telling stories that centre Black voices with nuance, beauty, and power. Earlier this year, Coming Home played to sold-out audiences in Ontario, resonating deeply with viewers across generations. The cast brings extraordinary presence and vocal power to these roles. Precious Osarenkhoe delivers an emotionally charged portrayal of Nina Simone. Christina Smith, a rising soprano known for blending operatic depth with contemporary reach, embodies Jessye Norman with commanding grace.

Executive Producer Monique Armstrong and marketing lead Bianca Garcia round out a creative team committed to amplifying Black artistry and expanding its reach nationwide.

More than a historical tribute, Coming Home is a reminder that the fight for justice and dignity continues. It is a celebration of legacy and a call to stand firmly in one’s truth. Audiences will leave moved and empowered, carrying the rhythm of resistance and the power of home within them.

Doors open at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available at theguildpei.com
