Island Fringe Festival: The Forest Ends With You
Big Kids Theatre, a Toronto-based devised theatre company presents The Forest Ends With You at The Guild in Charlottetown on October 9 at 5:30 pm, October 10 at 5:30 pm, October 11 at 6:45 pm, and October 12 at 2:45 pm.
Set in your childhood basement, The Forest Ends With You is a magical-realist exploration of suburbia and its pressures on the young people who inhabit it. The show follows a group of teenage friends through the night after they find the dead body of their former classmate. As pieces of the puzzle of his death come out of the woodwork, their favourite video game begins to come alive in a grotesque way. Alternating between the dull real world and the vibrant teenage imagination, The Forest Ends With You is a Y2K multimedia explosion of what it means to grow up in an environment that presses for conformity, exploring themes of secrets, growing up, fitting in, and teenage masculinity. Set in 2004 and heavily featuring a text-based RPG and shadow puppetry, the piece is a love letter to the creators’ childhoods.
Big Kids aims to create magical-realist, multidisciplinary works that explore themes of adolescence while pushing the boundaries of what is normally seen on Canadian stages. Photography by Alexa Jean Narezny.
