The first Charlottetown Pelikan Hub hosted by Hub Master Dan MacDonald (Bookmark) took place recently in the Private Cellar at Sim’s restaurant. Since 2014 the German writing instrument brand Pelikan has helped co-ordinate annual, simultaneous Pelikan Hubs around the world. Participants turned off their digital devices and settled into an evening of conversation centered on the joy of using fountain pens, inks and stationery.
A variety of Pelikan fountain pens made it to the PEI party including; a vintage Pelikan 140 model CIRCA 1950, a modern Pelikan M800 model CIRCA late 1990s and a limited Edition Olivine M200 model CIRCA 2018. A number of other pen brands such as Pilot, Kaweco and TWSBI were spoken about and shared during the evening.
Attendees talked about ink, favourite ink colors, brands and their characteristics for use with writing and art. An artist took the group through a step-by-step ink art demonstration. Each participant produced a doodle, using ink, water and a brush for their next handwritten correspondence, journal or planner.
The group learned about the history of the Pelikan writing instrument company and the various fountain pen models. Pelikan’s first fountain pen appeared on the market in 1929.
