Lee West: Reluctant Sheriff

Katie Mac

PEI writer Katie Mac, author of Ken’s Corner, has released her second novel, Lee West: Reluctant Sheriff, published by Dusty Saddle Publishing.

Set in the Old West, the western novel tells the story of a young man aiming for a simple life but instead he is roped into the dangerous job of the sheriff of a corrupt mining town.

“I think westerns are making a comeback on television, but there aren’t very many publishing companies specializing in this genre,” said Mac. “When I learned about Dusty Saddle Publishing’s work in bringing back the traditional western novel to new audiences, I thought Lee West would be a great fit.”

The story starts off with Lee looking for work as a blacksmith and he is trapped by a winter storm, away from his home and his new wife. When he witnesses a young girl being orphaned by senseless violence, Lee has no choice but to don the sheriff badge. He’s not afraid of criminals or corruption, but he dreads breaking the news to his no-nonsense young wife Victoria.

“I like the idea of a winter western. People get stuck indoors and all kinds of bad behavior crops up. If the weather is very bad, there is no escape at all,” said Mac. “I also wanted to explore why someone would do such a dangerous job when—even in the Old West—there were safer ways for someone like Lee to make a living.”

Lee West: Reluctant Sheriff is available on Amazon.
