A linocut print from Whale of a Tale by Sheila Forsyth

Exhibitions, craft demonstrations, readings, and more are on offer at Eptek Art & Culture Centre.

The exhibition A Walk in the Wood by local artist Steve Leard continues in the main gallery until April 9.

Leard’s intricately carved heirloom boxes, miniature houses, walking canes, wind catchers, black-and-white sketches, and rugs are on display. A veteran who returned to PEI in 1992, Leard transitioned from a career in the military to a three-decade exploration of form, function, and design. His imagery features mythical and surrealist creatures, inspired by Biomechanical artists like H.R. Giger. A Walk in the Wood continues his tradition of merging imaginative storytelling with traditional craftsmanship. Leard will be onsite to offer a demonstration of his wood carving art process on April 8 at 1 pm.

The PEI Modern Quilt Guild’s newest exhibition, Beyond the Block: Celebrating 10 Years of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild, will be on display in the main gallery from April 19–May 31.

The PEI Modern Quilt Guild (PEIMQG) was formed in 2015 by a small group of modern quilting enthusiasts with an aim to create and celebrate modern quilts and quilting on the Island. Now with over 40 members, the PEIMQG gathers monthly to motivate, inspire, and educate each other as they work on individual and collaborative projects.

In this celebration of the Guild’s first decade, visitors will see examples of many modern quilting techniques, including bold colours, maximalism (and minimalism), improvisation, asymmetry, and more.

PEIMQG members will be onsite April 19 from 1–3 pm for a free Meet the Artists event.

Two Magical Journeys, a collection of artworks by Sheila Forsyth, will be on display in the Eptek lobby from April 7–26.

In the exhibition, Forsyth shares the original artwork from her two newest children’s books. The book A Whale of a Tale: A Magical Journey showcases her printmaking techniques, used to create the illustrations. It features silk-dyed art as the cover image. For the book By a Candle’s Warmth, Forsyth used oil pastel on suede matboard, giving the pieces a softer, more whimsical effect. Forsyth is a writer, artist, novelist playwright, children’s curriculum creator, musician, and scientist. She brings her love of nature, science, and story into her work. In addition to the prints and other art pieces used in the books, a selection of pieces that show her printmaking and art processes will also be on display, as well as a felted piece by Vivian Aho that was inspired by the story in one of the books.

Forsyth will be onsite April 26 at 1 pm to read from her two new children’s books. She will be available to share insight into her art process, as well. Books will be available for purchase, and book signing is available. This family-friendly event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.
