SUMMARY:Community Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:The City of Charlottetown is inviting residents to take part in a community greening and tree planting event taking place on June 20 at River Ridge Park from 10 am–1 pm.\n\nCommunity members are welcome to join City staff and volunteers to help transform the park from an open grassy area into a naturalized park with forested areas. This project will provide native species’ habitat\, improve stormwater absorption and filtration\, reduce air pollution\, and help lower heat through shade and moisture released by trees. Enhancements to the park will also add seasonal visual interest\, provide increased privacy for nearby residents\, and include an area of edible plants for the community.\n\nNo pre-registration is required\, and all planting supplies will be provided on site\, including trees\, tools\, and gloves. Volunteers are encouraged to wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear.\n\nThis initiative is funded by Green Communities Canada through its Living Cities Canada Fund\, which has supported more than 60 community greening projects across the country since 2023.\n\nFor more information on the community tree planting event\, visit the City’s website.

SUMMARY:City Cinema Classic of the Month: The Tall Guy
DESCRIPTION:Comedy/Romance. 14A\, brief nudity\, some language.\nDir: Mel Smith\, UK\, 1989\, 88 min.\nJeff Goldblum\, Rowan Atkinson\, Emma Thompson. \n“Jeff Goldblum is a paragon of gawky charm and awkward vulnerabilities in The Tall Guy\, a British-made romp with the comic gusto of A Fish Called Wanda… Goldblum is Dexter King\, an actor who figured he’d have no competition for American roles if he moved to London. What he didn’t expect was that there would be none. So he has become a straight man for Ron Anderson (Rowan Atkinson)\, an abusive superstar with a long-running show on London’s White Way… At the local allergy clinic\, Dexter is smitten by nurse Kate Lemmon (Emma Thompson)… Urged on by Kate\, he goes on a series of auditions and lands the role of John Merrick in a preposterous musical adaptation of The Elephant Man called Elephant!… Just when everything seems to be falling into place\, he falls in with a seductive chorine and very nearly loses everything…. The Tall Guy\, breezily steered along by British comedian\, writer and TV director Mel Smith\, is chockablock with bits\, puns\, stuff and nonsense. Every twist brings some new turn-on\, as when Dexter and Kate’s love is requited in a rumpus of burst milk cartons and broken furniture. It’s a triumph of tongue and cheekiness.” —Rita Kempley\, The Washington Post

SUMMARY:City Cinema: Little Lorraine
DESCRIPTION:Crime Drama. 14A\, coarse language.\nDir: Andy Hines\, Canada\, 2026\, 116 min.\nStephen Amell\, Stephen McHattie\, Auden Thornton. \n“An unbelievable true slice of Canadian history serves as the basis for the crime drama Little Lorraine. It tells the story of how a remote Canadian fishing village with 60 residents became a major hub for cross-border cocaine smuggling in the 1980s… the film is both enthralling and haunting\, delivering a story of deception\, morality\, and community… Set amid the stunning landscape of Little Lorraine in Cape Breton\, the film opens in the wake of a devastating 1986 mining explosion that claimed the lives of 10 men. Amidst the mine’s closure\, Jimmy is left jobless with a young family to support. His estranged and unreliable great uncle Huey reappears\, offering Jimmy a position on his lobster fishing boat – an offer he is in no position to decline… Huey’s true intentions are soon revealed: the men are part of a cocaine smuggling operation… The situation escalates when an Interpol agent determined to dismantle the ring\, arrives\, setting the players on a collision course… Hines’ debut transforms a forgotten chapter of Canadian history into a very human drama. Little Lorraine proves that reality can be stranger and more gripping than fiction\, making it one to watch.” —Rachel West\, The Alliance of Women Film Journalists

SUMMARY:Anne & Gilbert\, The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Anne & Gilbert\, The Musical returns for its 22nd season this spring with a milestone debut: Island performer Holly Perry will take on the role of Anne Shirley for the first time\, wearing the original Anne dress created for the musical’s first season in 2005. \nThe 26-year-old Acadian performer from Prince County has been part of the cast since 2022\, but 2026 marks her first season in the title role. The historic costume she will wear was designed for the show’s premiere at the Victoria Playhouse in Victoria-by-the-Sea\, PEI\, more than two decades ago\, and hasn’t been worn since. \nThe original costume reflects the character’s Island roots: simple\, practical and earth-toned\, with shades of green reminiscent of PEI fields and rust-coloured trim echoing the province’s soil. While inspired by late-19th-century fashion\, the dress was designed for movement and performance rather than strict historical rigidity. This is\, of course\, much like Anne herself\, who refuses to be constrained by convention. \nThough Anne & Gilbert is often promoted as the love story between Anne and her childhood rival\, the heart of the musical is Anne’s own journey—her determination\, imagination and refusal to be diminished. \nFeaturing a 20-member cast and orchestra\, Anne & Gilbert\, The Musical runs from May 5 to October 26 at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall in Charlottetown.  \nTickets are available online via anneandgilbert.com

SUMMARY:C’Mon In! An Island Kitchen Party
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, C’Mon In! An Island Kitchen Party brings the spirit of an Atlantic Canadian kitchen party to the stage at The Mack in Charlottetown\, running from June 6–August 29. \nThe production places audiences inside a familiar Maritime setting where music\, storytelling\, and humour unfold over the course of the evening. Blending concert performance with comedy and easy\, join-in moments\, C’Mon In! reflects a tradition where shared songs and stories shape the experience as much as the music itself. \nThe show is led by Island artists Robbie Doherty and Pierce Clarke\, whose shared background in music and storytelling anchors the production. Clarke\, a PEI-born multi-instrumentalist and Berklee College of Music graduate\, brings performances shaped by Island life and personal narrative. Doherty contributes a diverse career spanning tribute bands\, ECMA-nominated children’s recordings\, theatre\, and broadcasting. Together\, they guide the evening with an informal\, conversational approach that mirrors the atmosphere of a traditional kitchen party. \n Drawing from the Atlantic Canadian songbook\, C’Mon In! features music by artists including Stompin’ Tom Connors\, Anne Murray\, and Great Big Sea\, alongside moments of banter and audience interaction that evolve naturally from performance to performance. \nTickets and information are available at confederationcentre.com/cmonin.

SUMMARY:333: The Toronto Bathhouse Raids
DESCRIPTION:In 2026\, The Guild unveils Rooted & Rising: A Season of Performances That Evoke and Provoke\, a lineup that champions bold voices\, transformative stories\, and artists who push the boundaries of performance. This summer’s presentation series invites audiences to explore history\, identity\, resilience\, and joy through four major productions\, a monthly music series\, and returning favourites. \nKicking off the season is 333: The Toronto Bathhouse Raids\, a gripping look at a defining moment in queer Canadian history. Set during the 1981 Operation Soap raids\, the play follows three “found-ins\,” Honey\, Darren\, and Eddy\, as the community’s uprising sparks what many view as the beginning of Canada’s Pride movement. Each must confront what they’re willing to risk when dignity\, livelihood\, and belonging are on the line. This vital\, often-overlooked chapter in queer history explores homophobia\, identity\, intergenerational dialogue\, and the ongoing fight for liberation. \nAs The Guild continues its commitment to accessible\, diverse\, and impactful arts experiences\, the 2026 summer season is an invitation to witness artistry that challenges\, celebrates\, and inspires. \nFor tickets and full programming details\, visit theguildpei.com.
