SUMMARY:Quartette: Four Voices in Fibre Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The spring art rotation at The Gallery – Coffee House & Bistro in Charlottetown features Quartette: Four Voices in Fibre\, an exhibition of rug hooking works by New Brunswick artist Katherine DeVere-Pettigrew and Prince Edward Island artists Carol Gabanna\, Carol Moffatt\, and Darlene Rhodenizer. The exhibition runs from March 2 to May 31 at 82 Great George Street\, Charlottetown. \nQuartette: Four Voices in Fibre presents the work of four contemporary fibre artists whose practices are rooted in rug hooking and expanded through experimentation. Working on PEI and in NB\, the artists are connected by a shared passion for self-expression and creativity\, and a deep engagement with fibre\, colour\, and loops of yarn. Together\, these four voices form a quartette—where individual approaches coexist in collective visual harmony. They share a love of shaping the quiet elegance of wool and hope visitors will be delighted\, inspired\, and curious. \nThe artists will celebrate the launch of their show with a free Opening Reception on March 5 from 6–8 pm. Everyone is welcome. The exhibition can be viewed during regular café hours\, 8 am–5 pm daily. All pieces are for sale.

SUMMARY:East Village Vintage Market
DESCRIPTION:The East Village Vintage Market will debut at #10 Mariners Lane heritage building on April 25 from 10 am–4 pm and April 26 from 11 am–3 pm. A part of this year’s Doors Open Down East event\, the market was born from a desire to have an event that showcases the fabulous boutique vintage sellers on\, and around Prince Edward Island\, to host ‘living sustainably’ purveyors\, and offer quality curated vintage faire for people to shop and enjoy. \nAttendees can expect to find both beautifully curated vintage clothing and vintage home decor to peruse and purchase. Change rooms will be available\, tap and cash payment is accepted\, and everyone is encouraged to bring a reusable shopping bag\, but paper shoppers are also available. Plenty of onsite parking is available\, and there is no fee to attend. The local eatery\, Harbourview\, will be open for a post shopping meal. \nInspired by the Palm Springs Vintage Market that runs monthly\, the East Village Vintage market will continue after the debut event\, and will be happening monthly during the summer on the last Saturday of June\, July\, and August. \nInfo: Andrea Hill at itchycooparkvintagestyle@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Freaky Friday: A New Musical
DESCRIPTION:Bluefield High School’s musical production returns with a high-energy\, modern musical\, Freaky Friday. This year’s show presents a contemporary musical adaptation of the well-known story. Performances will take place in the Bluefield High School cafeteria\, with public showtimes on April 23\, 24\, and 25 at 7 pm\, and a matinee performance on April 26 at 2 pm. \nFreaky Friday was adapted for the stage by Bridget Carpenter\, a television writer and co-executive producer of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood\, and is based on the original novel by Mary Rodgers. The musical score was written by Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning composers Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey\, known for Next to Normal and If/Then. \nThe story follows Katherine\, an overworked mother\, and her teenage daughter\, Ellie\, who magically swap bodies and have only one day to put things right again. By spending a day in each other’s shoes\, they come to appreciate one another’s struggles\, learn self-acceptance\, and discover the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter. The production promises a hilarious and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic. \nTickets are available online at locarius.io or at bluefield.edu.pe.ca/extra-curricular/musical-freaky-friday. Tickets will also be sold at the cafeteria entrance prior to each performance.

SUMMARY:Luminos Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra and the Island Choral Society: The Creation
DESCRIPTION:Haydn’s “The Creation” will be performed by Dr. Margot Rejskind’s Luminos Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra and the Island Choral Society on April 26 at 3 pm at St. Paul’s in Charlottetown. The combined ensemble of 60 musicians will present Haydn’s setting of the creation story. The soloists are Georgia Driscoll\, Brodie MacRae and Ian Solomon. The performance will run approximately 90 minutes. \nIt starts with a bang—a Big Bang. Haydn takes the audience back to the very beginning: the formless chaos and then suddenly there is light. He musically paints the first six days: waters\, land and skies; the trees and plants; sun\, moon and stars; the sea creatures and birds; the multitudes of animals; and finally\, humankind. \nThus concludes Haydn’s oratorio\, written two and a quarter centuries ago to portray the creation of the world as narrated in Genesis\, with additional references from the Psalms and Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” Soloists tell the story as the archangels Raphael\, Uriel and Gabriel\, and finally as Adam and Eve. Accompanying the narrative are choruses and orchestral passages. \nThe premier performance in Vienna in 1798 was by invitation only; however\, the crowds of ordinary Haydn fans reportedly packed the streets outside\, requiring police presence to keep order.  \nTickets are available at luminosensemble.com\, or cash-only at the door. Admission is free for children under 12. Email islandchoralsociety@gmail.com or call 902-628-6778 for more information.

SUMMARY:City Cinema Classic of the Month: Body Heat
DESCRIPTION:Thriller. 18A\, sexual content\, violence.\nDir: Lawrence Kasdan\, US\, 1981\, 113 min.\nWilliam Hurt\, Kathleen Turner\, Richard Crenna. \n“Body Heat is an engrossing\, mightily stylish noir thriller in which sex and crime walk hand in hand down the path to tragedy\, just like in the old days… Lawrence Kasdan makes an impressively confident directorial debut. William Hurt is a spirited but struggling lawyer just getting by in a marginal Florida coast town whose persistent pursuit of sultry Kathleen Turner pays off in the way of a torrid affair\, highly satisfying for both parties. She’s the young wife of loaded middle-aged businessman Richard Crenna\, and it isn’t long before the passion can’t tolerate the limitations imposed. Just as in Double Indemnity it’s the dame who hatches the murder plot\, with the guy finally falling into line and coming up with the ingenious way to pull it off. However familiar the elements\, Kasdan has brought the drama alive by steeping it in humid\, virtually oozing atmosphere. The heat of the title is palpably evident… Hurt successfully mixes both laconicism and innocence. In her film debut\, Turner registers strongly as a hard gal with a past.” —Variety
