The Princess Show

The Arts Guild presents The Princess Show, the award-winning multimedia drag musical extravaganza from Halifax-based live art company HEIST, running August 6–9 at 8 pm at The Arts Guild in Charlottetown.

The production is part of The Arts Guild’s Rooted & Rising Series, a curated presentation of works designed to provoke and evoke, challenging audiences, sparking conversation, and creating opportunities for reflection through bold, transformative storytelling.

The fully lip-synched production follows Princess Edward as she confronts her inner demons after a strange and soothing beast kidnaps Abel and holds him in a disconnected trance. Faced with the temptation to spiral into shame and self-loathing, Princess Edward must instead rise to the challenge of radical self-love to save the person she loves most.

Part musical, part drag show, and part anime cartoon, this 70-minute multimedia production immerses the audience in a colourful, psychedelic fantasy world. The Princess Show combines drag costumes, choreography, monster battles, live bass guitar looping, and animated video backdrops featuring side characters and vividly imagined worlds. The result is a spectacle that is as campy as it is emotionally resonant.

Since its debut with Theatre Outré in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 2016, The Princess Show has toured from coast to coast, appearing at Buddies in Bad Times in Toronto, the rEvolver Festival in Vancouver, OUTstages in Victoria, Fredericton Pride with Theatre New Brunswick, and as a Fringe Hit at the Halifax Fringe Festival. The script has also been published in Canadian Theatre Review, and in 2021 the production was named a finalist for the prestigious Nova Scotia Masterworks Prize.
