The 14th Annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Conference

The Alzheimer Society of Prince Edward Island will host its 14th annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Conference on September 16 from 9 am–3 pm at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel. This year’s theme “Pieces of the Mosaic: Personality, Emotion, Spirituality, and Behaviour in Dementia” marks the importance of spirituality and emotional well-being alongside clinical approaches to dementia care.

The full-day conference will feature two concurrent learning streams – one designed for healthcare providers and one for caregivers and persons living with dementia – covering topics such as trauma-informed care, behavioural changes, depression and dementia, compassion fatigue, and strategies for living well with dementia.

Highlights include keynote “Caring for the Complex Client: Personality, Pathology, Dementia, and Behaviour” with geropsychologist and professor Dr. Richard Zweig, a keynote panel featuring Mi’kmaq Knowledge Keeper Julie Pellissier-Lush, Pastor Jonny Robertson, Chaplain Rev. Paul Wilkie, and Carol Stevenson Seller, minister and former caregiver, who will discuss “Wisdom Across Traditions: Spiritual Insights for Dementia and Caregiving”, and a spotlight session with Dr. Robyn Waxman, geriatric psychiatrist, who will present “Depression and Dementia: A Two-Way Street – Assessment and Treatment (including research on electroconvulsive therapy)”.

The conference offers in-person and virtual participation, bringing together leading experts, healthcare professionals, community members, caregivers, and persons living with dementia. In-person tickets include hot lunch, morning refreshments, and coffee and tea.
