La Gang à Manu

Village musical acadien will present La Gang à Manu this summer in Abram-Village, a concert series of traditional Acadian songs and music that will play weekly on Tuesdays to Fridays at 1:30 pm and 3 pm in Ti-Manuel’s Barn, beginning in July and running through August. The concerts will feature a group of renowned performers.

One of the new group’s lead vocals belongs to none other than legendary Franco-Ontarian singer Michel Lalonde, founder of the magnificent folk-rock group Garolou (1972 to 1983, and 1997 to 2000), who moved to the Evangeline region several years ago. This singer has recorded several albums with Garolou, as well as a solo artist. He has won numerous awards and accolades over the years. Many will remember his glorious hits “Victoria,” “À la claire fontaine,” “La retraite de Bonaparte” and “La vendée,” among many others. As a member of Garolou, he has played hundreds of shows in Canada, France, Switzerland, Germany and the US, sold over 200,000 records and appeared in over 100 TV shows, radio concerts and recorded events. His most recent solo album (his third), Comme un engin, was recorded and released on the Island where his popular ’70s band was formed.

Rémi Arsenault, who arranged and produced this fine album, joins him as the second member of “La Gang à Manu”. Rémi has also played all over North America and Europe, as a guitarist or bass player, as a member of various bands or as a guest accompanist (Vishtèn, Natalie McMaster, Donnell Leahy, Catherine MacLellan, Fayo, Dominique Dupuis, Coïg, An Acoustic Sin, etc.) He has been a member of the traditional band Gadelle for many years, and often plays with his wife and with his family band. He won the 2010 Musician of the Year Award at the MusicPEI Awards.

His wife, the exceptional singer-guitarist-accordionist-pianist Caroline Bernard, is also a member of the new band. Caroline has also toured internationally with groups such as Gadelle and Les Girls, performed with Lennie Gallant, and in recent years has often sung with her husband and sons, in a band called “Mama et les boys”. Caroline has a great solo album to her credit, as well as a Christmas CD with her mother, Jeannita Bernard.

Last but not least, there’s the magnificent fiddler Gilbert Arsenault. This young man has been astonishing audiences since the age of 10, both with musical groups such as the former Paloudes trio, and as a soloist and part of various shows and musical productions such as The Highland Storm at the College of Piping and Performing Arts. He has won various awards for his group and solo performances. He also participated in the recording of the album Des vieilles nouvelles with his classmates from École Évangéline.
