PEI launches Heat Alert and Response System to help Islanders enjoy the summer safely

Islanders are encouraged to plan ahead and enjoy the PEI summer safely as PEI launches its new Heat Alert and Response System (HARS). HARS provides clear, timely information when hot weather is expected and helps ensure a more coordinated response across the province. It helps to ensure all Islanders, including municipalities, workplaces, community organizations, and service providers have the same information and guidance during periods of extreme heat. HARS strengthens coordination by providing shared, consistent information about when a heat alert is issued, what it means, and where to find reliable health and safety information. It builds on existing services and emergency supports and is designed to help Islanders prepare for heat waves. PEI’s approach reflects the Island’s size, communities, and service networks, while aligning with best practices from across the country. Hot and humid conditions can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those most vulnerable, including older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and people who work outdoors. Islanders are encouraged to take simple precautions during the summer months, including staying hydrated, seeking shade or cool spaces, wearing weather appropriate attire, and limiting outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. For more information about HARS, visit Preparing for heat waves. When a heat alert is issued, Islanders can find up-to-date information through Environment and Climate Change Canada’s WeatherCAN app or Weather Conditions and Forecasts website. Heat alerts will also appear as a headline-style banner across the Government of PEI website when active, directing visitors to current heat alert information. Additionally, the Stay Cool PEI  site includes safety tips, information on symptoms of heat-related illness, and resources to help individuals and families prepare for hot weather.
