Maggie’s Wake – From Tradition to Creation Workshop
Maggie’s Wake, a contemporary folk band from Ontario and recipient of the 2025 Canadian Folk Music Award for Best New/Emerging Artist, is coming to Prince Edward Island through a collaboration between Souris Show Hall and St. Peters’ Courthouse Theatre. The July 3 program will feature an afternoon workshop at the Courthouse Theatre and an evening performance at Souris Show Hall.
With Maggie’s Wake, Souris and St. Peters are using different formats to expand community engagement with a unique act that would otherwise be out of reach.
“From Tradition to Creation” is a 75-minute creative workshop that bridges tradition and innovation by exploring how familiar melodies and songs can be reimagined through modern arrangements, fresh harmonies, and contemporary rhythmic ideas. Participants learn how to honour the essence of traditional tunes while shaping them into something new, dynamic and distinctly their own. Maggie’s Wake will also offer insight into their own creative process. That process creates their original compositions that remain faithful to influences of folk and classic country music combined with celtic instrumentation.
With a rich network of venues across the Island that cater to overlapping audiences, it makes sense for neighbouring communities to work closely together, whether joining up for performances or supporting each other with cross-communication of events. St Peters and Souris hope this is the first of many collaborations between themselves and an expanding group of communities. Working together to host great entertainment for Islanders means audiences benefit, no matter where they live.
