Genealogical Society Presentation

The PEI Genealogical Society is hosting a public meeting on May 9, Mother’s Day Eve, from 2–3:30 pm at Beaconsfield’s Carriage House in Charlottetown.

In a spirit of reverence for mothers, the Society invites the public to attend a presentation on the collection and preservation of old photos, delivered by Claire Trainor, conservation technician with the PEI Public Archives and Records Office. Celebrating motherhood has deep historical roots, reaching back to ancient times. While it has always been about honouring the nurturing and sacrificial aspects of motherhood, its expression has varied across geography and time. The modern, holiday-like observance of Mother’s Day emerged in the early 20th century in North America. For family historians and genealogists, tracing female ancestry can be challenging. If one is fortunate, an image from 160 or so years ago might be available. Beyond that, they can only imagine what their ancestral mothers looked like.
