CMA-PEI seeking volunteer board members
Museums and heritage sites play a crucial role in society as respected and dependable curators of public heritage. They hold and share the stories that give meaning to the past and guidance for the future. Through the foresight, dedication, and hard work of many Islanders over the decades, PEI is home to more than 70 museums and heritage sites. That translates to roughly one museum per 2,600 Islanders, covering a wide range of Island history and industry, including military, fisheries, fox farming, shipbuilding, railways, historic homes, Acadian history, and more. In 1983, the Community Museums Association of PEI (CMA-PEI) was formed to provide Island museums and heritage sites with a shared platform for support and advocacy. It has proven to be a tremendous resource for its members, many of whom rely on volunteer boards to operate. CMA-PEI has developed policies and programs that have raised standards in the care, preservation, display, and interpretation of collections and databases. It has also served as a unified voice for its members, increasing awareness among the public, government, and like-minded organizations of the role museums, heritage sites, and archives play in Island communities. A volunteer board of nine members forms the foundation of CMA-PEI. The organization has one employee, an executive director, who works under the guidance of the board and the membership. While board members are often connected to particular museums and heritage sites, affiliation with a specific site is not required. CMA-PEI is issuing an Island-wide call for interest in joining its board. Terms are three years but can be flexible. The association invites individuals to express interest in serving on its volunteer board, which supports more than 70 members in achieving excellence in museum standards. The board is seeking individuals with a passion for museums and heritage and offers an opportunity to work with like-minded people. To learn more, email info@museumspei.ca.
