Onward! the all-Island Opening Night of the 5th Annual Charlottetown Film Festival on October 25 at 7 pm at City Cinema will provide the first chance for Prince Edward Islanders to see the works from the FilmPEI program, Film4Ward.

Jason Rogerson’s feline comedy Furball, Ryan McCarville’s rom-com Hot or Not, Jenna MacMillan’s touching drama Sunnyside, and Mille Clarkes’ poetic dreamscape Solastalgia will be shown. Since City Cinema can only seat 70 patrons, an encore screening of Onward! will follow at 9 pm.

One of the main goals of the Film4Ward program is to build capacity in the film industry on PEI and fund projects that can lift local producers and directors to the next level of their creative careers.

And that goal was achieved in its first year of operation: all four films made their world premieres at the 2019 FIN International Film Festival in Halifax in September. Sunnyside and Solastalgia were featured in the Reel East Coast Shorts Gala. Furball has been accepted at the Cat Film Festival in NYC.

FilmPEI is extremely excited to share the Film 4Ward films with the world.” says Renee Laprise, ED of FilmPEI, “All of the teams delivered films of high production value and quality storytelling.”

Island filmmaker Mille Clarkes observed: “This program has galvanized the film community on PEI and helped stimulate the creation of a really solid crew of people who work in the various disciplines of film.”

Film 4Ward is funded by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, through Innovation PEI and the Culture Action Plan, with additional funding provided by Telefilm Canada and CBC.

And the good news is the Film4Ward program will continue into 2019/20—supporting the growth of our local film community. Onward! indeed.

The main goals of the Film4Ward program, which include workshops, mentorship and on-set training, are to build capacity in the film industry on PEI and fund projects that can lift local producers and directors to the next level of their creative careers.

Film 4Ward 2019/20 will be very similar in structure to the first year and will launch in September with a submission deadline of November 18, 2019.
