2026 PEI Book Awards

Recognition for Island authors

More than a dozen Island authors were recognized for their work at the 2026 PEI Book Awards, held on May 24 at the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre. The 2026 PEI Book Awards shortlists and winners (in bold) are: 

Children’s Literature

Sarah Ponakey, Storycatcher and Âhâsiw’s Forest Powwow by Sita MacMillan;
My Little Ogichidaa: An Indigenous Lullaby by Wille Poll;
The Sandcastle that Jack Built by Judith Graves & illustrated by Maurice Bernard.

Fiction

Ken’s Corner by Katie Mac;
The Baby Train by Stella Shepard;
The Floating Days by Susan Rodgers.

Non-Fiction

Erica Rutherford: Her Lives and Worksby Pan Wendt; 
Called by Mother Earth by Greg F. Naterer;
Canada’s Defence Procurement Woes by Jeffrey F. Collins.

Poetry

The Work by Bren Simmers;
The Geography of Home by Edward MacDonald;
A Skeptic in Springtime by Brent MacLaine.

The PEI Book Awards are presented every two years. Submissions were assessed by an independent jury based on quality of writing, social and cultural merit, and originality of content, approach, and technique. Each award included a cash prize, a handcrafted commemorative gift, and a specially designed seal for display on the award-winning book.
